# Introducing the Stedi NPI registry

Apr 9, 2026

Products

You can now look up details for any US healthcare provider by NPI using the [Stedi NPI registry](/content/npi-registry/index.html).

An [NPI](/content/docs/healthcare/national-provider-identifier/index.html) is required for most healthcare transactions, including [eligibility checks](/content/docs/healthcare/intro-eligibility-checks/index.html), [claims](/content/docs/healthcare/claims-processing-workflows-overview/index.html), and [claim status checks](/content/docs/healthcare/check-claim-status/index.html). You can use the registry to verify a provider’s NPI and other information before submitting these transactions.

## What’s an NPI?

A [National Provider Identifier (NPI)](/content/docs/healthcare/national-provider-identifier/index.html) is a unique 10-digit ID assigned to US healthcare providers.

There are two types of NPIs: one for individual providers and one for organizations. The NPI registry lets you search for and view records for both types.

## What does the NPI registry show?

The registry includes dedicated NPI detail pages for over 9.3 million provider records, sourced from the [NPPES NPI Registry](https://npiregistry.cms.hhs.gov/search).

Each NPI page includes:

- The provider's names

- Current status: **Active** or **Inactive**

- Contact information

- Taxonomy codes and specialties

- Other identifiers and credentialing details
